Police: Alcohol suspected as a factor in collision

LAHAINA, Hawaii -

Maui police say a 28-year-old Lahaina woman was hospitalized in extremely critical condition after she was hit by a motorcycle early Thursday.

It happened at around 1:46 a.m. on Honoapiilani Highway near Hoohui Road in Lahaina.

The motorcycle, driven by a 46-year-old Lahaina man, was headed south on Honoapiilani Highway approaching the intersection at Hoohui Road when the woman crossed the highway and was hit by the motorcycle.

Police say the woman was not in a marked crosswalk.

The motorcycle rider suffered a fractured arm and transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center.

Alcohol is suspected as a factor in the collision.  Speed is also suspected as a factor, but the case is still under investigation.
