Key clue found in Honolulu homicide investigation
Identity of slain woman revealed
A key clue is recovered, but a murder mystery remains unsolved. A Punahou Street homicide has friends of the victim in mourning, and neighbors uneasy about a killer on the loose.
Makayla Jette used to walk her dog daily along Punahou Street, without much worry. Until the discovery Tuesday night of a woman's body in the driveway of her own home.
"I've seen that driveway area many times. I would have never realized anything like that would happen there, so it made me really really nervous," said Jette.
Wednesday evening, as Jette and her dog walked by the home, police detectives were once again on scene. They were searching computer records and looking around the home for other clues into a brutal killing. Witnesses said the body was found bound, and gagged. It may have also been left under a carpet for days.
"We are all mourning and we want them to find who did this to her," said Puna Choo.
Choo and other friends identified the woman as Mary Beth San Juan, a real estate broker for Happy Hawaii Homes.
"She had just celebrated her birthday, just bought herself a Mercedes. She just lost 15 to 20 pounds. I mean she was looking fabulous and feeling fabulous,"
said Nazarene Anderson, San Juan's agent.
San Juan was also an aspiring actress.
In what has turned out to be a real life crime drama, her friends said they recently noticed something different about her.
"They said she was acting not quiet herself. It was really weird, unlike her," said Choo.
San Juan's body was found by her ex-husband Tuesday evening, but her new Mercedes was missing. Police found it in Waikiki Wednesday morning.
Now, friends and neighbors hope her killer will also be found soon. So the murder mystery along Punahou Street will be solved.
"You hear about people dying, but not murders where you are living. So it is pretty scary to experience that," said Jette.
San Juan's ex-husband told police he had dinner with her on Saturday. He told witnesses that is the last time her saw her. Saturday was also the last time some of San Juan's acting friends saw her alive.
