Kauai police have arrested a 19-year-old Wailua man in connection with a car theft at Kealia Beach.
Officers say Kaiolohia Youn was arrested Sunday for Unauthorized Entry into a Motor Vehicle (UEMV) after he allegedly entered a truck illegally and stole the occupant’s wallet.
According to police, the incident occurred shortly after noon on Sunday, when a Nissan pickup truck got stuck in the sand on the north end of Kealia Beach. The 23-year-old female driver of the pickup was being assisted by several beachgoers who were attempting to tow the truck out of the sand.
When Youn arrived to the scene, he started assisting the driver, but then suddenly entered the truck without permission and began driving it recklessly down the beach. He eventually returned the truck to the driver, but she immediately noticed that her wallet was missing from the front seat.
When the woman attempted to question Youn, he fled the scene in a blue Toyota Tacoma.
Officers were able to locate and return the victim’s stolen wallet.
Youn was released Monday on $2,000 bail.
