Kauai Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. says his proposed budget will deal with more of the same as last year -- focusing on basics amid shrinking revenues and rising expenses.
Carvalho detailed his proposed $180.6 million budget for the 2015 fiscal year on Monday as he delivered his State of the County address.
The Garden Island newspaper says the cost of government has gone up in the past year. Carvalho says one of the contributing factors has been collective-bargaining costs that account for a $3.3 million increase during the current fiscal year.
Those costs will also include another $4 million in pay raises for the county's full-time employees during the 2015 fiscal year that begins July 1.
The budget process goes before the Kauai County Council on March 27.
