KAPA`A, Hawaii -

An 8-year-old Kauai boy is recovering at the hospital after he was bitten by a dog on Thursday, according to the boy's family.

It happened at the Wailua Homestead in Kapa'a.

Matthew Dela Cruz says his son, Jeremiah, was riding a bicycle when a rottweiler jumped a fence.

Dela Cruz says the dog bit Jeremiah on the leg and elbow, dragging him off his bike.

A neighbor came to the rescue after hearing the boy's screams.

"After hearing my son screaming for help, he was saying, 'Please help me somebody.  Please help me. God help me,' and this neighbor had heard," said Matthew Dela Cruz.

Jeremiah Dela Cruz said, "I was really freaked out.  I felt like I needed to run away."

Jeremiah has a total of 10 lacerations.

The Kauai Humane Society put down the dog after its owner surrendered the canine to authorities.  The dog's owner was also cited.
