Some people are worried Kailua is becoming CRIME-lua, and the latest victim is University of Hawaii's basketball coach Gib Arnold. His house was just burglarized... and KITV4's Brenton Awa is live with tonight's top story.. Brenton... Some worry on the windward side! Yunji -- They do worry... And for pretty good reason. We went door to door today and spoke with over a half a dozen residents living on the Kalaheo hillside who all had a story to tell. Every one of them had either been a victim of a break in -- or know someone in the area who has. Kailua's known as a tranquil beach town... A place to chill out and do some shopping.. Lately, burglars have been enjoying it, too! NATPOP OF LADY GETTING OUT OF CAR Melanie Herr had a near run in with crooks on Monday. She was with her grandkids in their house when thieves broke into her car. In a matter of minutes -- she says -- they stole her Ipad and other personal items. 2:04 "YOUR HOUSE YOUR HOME YOUR PROPERTY, YOU REALLY FEEL INVADED." And she's not alone. Just down the road -- others have their own stories about burglaries.. 10:58 "IT'S KIND OF SORT OF ON A OCCASIONAL BASIS WE'LL HEAR ABOUT ONE NEIGHBOR OR ANOTHER HAVING A PROBLEM." Including one home broken into over and over... Until the residents moved out! According to H-P-D's website 31-burglaries have happened in last 30-days. That's up from the average of 14-per-month since December. HPD says its officers are following up on leads but no arrests have been made yet. At this home ... There have been Two break-ins. Jewelry -- tvs -- and medication... GONE. The residents installed locking windows and plan on putting in security cameras and an alarm. They're also counting on strength in numbers. 8:53 "WE TALK TO THE NEIGHBORS WHO ALSO HAVE HAD PROBLEMS AND WE KIND OF LOOK OUT FOR EACH OTHER." After Cory Mehau's home was burglarized, he created a Facebook page called Hono Kailua. In hopes to get residents connected -- and use NEW technology to jump start OLD neighborhood watching ways. 18:12 "WE CAME FROM THE DAYS WHERE YOU DO SOMETHING WRONG AND BY THE TIME YOU GET HOME THEY ALREADY KNOW ABOUT IT." Despite the recent spike of burglaries in Kailua -- the town still see's less break-ins than other areas on Oahu. Kailua's had 91-burglaries since January... Compared to Kaneohe's 111 -- Makiki's 151 -- and Pear City's 102.
