MONTANA -

A Kailua man is lucky to be alive after the B-1 Bomber he was flying in crashed and burned in a Montana field.

Captain Chad Nishizuka was one of four airmen from Ellsworth Air Base that was ejected before the plane made impact according to the Rapid City Journal.

Nishizuka's brother Reid, also from Kailua, died in April when he was piloting an MC-12 aircraft that crashed near Kandahar Airfield in Afghanistan.

Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of Monday's crash.

"Air combat command will commission a safety investigation board and we will investigate the cause of the aircraft crash," said Col. Kevin Kennedy a 28th Bomb Wing Commander. "We have to make sure we understand what happened and if we can prevent a future occurrence we will do so."

Ranchers who watched the plane go down say it broke apart in midair.
