It's a go for 803 WaimanuUPDATED 7:49 PM HST Jan 08, 2014Video Transcript
Once a high rise, now a MID rise ... But still controversial.. A new condo project in Kakaako is a GO. Good evening, I'm Yunji De Nies. And I'm Paula Akana. It's called 803 Waimanu, and final approval came today. KITV4's Ashley Moser is standing by LIVE in Kakaako -- with tonight's top story. Ashley -- what has people so fired up?? Paula...residents of the imperial plaza condos are concerned about the distance between the their apartments and 803 waimanu. I'm standing 30 feet from the plaza and this will be the edge of the new development. A distance that some residents say are too close. "nat pop of Mr. H" Plenty of Kakaako residents are ready to battle to the end over concerns they still have about this new development. Traffic is one.. Proximity is another. 39:03-39:14 "It's a first down... 10 yards away from my lanai. My living room, my bedroom are looking right into their living room and bedroom" Eddie Johnson is a resident of Imperial Plaza...a high- rise right next to 803 Waimanu. He says even though the developer now plans fewer units... the new mid-high rise will still disturb their neighborhood traffic. 37:45-37:50 "They're still within the rules. But my hopes was that they use some discretion to perhaps have a smaller building be constructed." With community input and HCDA recommendations ... MJF Development shrunk the height from 27 stories down to 7 with 153 workforce units. In other words, a mix of middle class, luxury and affordable units. 40:37-40:48 We've decided that we would comport with the rules and work with what we have as exemptions. And obviously there's a loss of workforce housing." Mola says the development will enhance an already active neighborhood. 41:56-42:18 "The more residents we get to live in this area they will really activate the whole retail, restaurant, night scene as well as making it a safer place to live." The HCDA did recommend that MFJ Developers add a one-way out of the parking garage on Kawaihau Street and one- way in right here on Waimanu street. Construction...P aula and Yunji...will start this summer and last 12 months. Reporting live from Kakaako...Ashley Moser ...Kitv 4 News. Back to you!
