Iolani vandals destroy original glass workUPDATED 7:29 PM HST Feb 10, 2014Video Transcript
Questions tonight about security at Iolani Palace after a damaging break-in. Good evening, I'm Yunji De Nies. And I'm Paula Akana. An original glass window more than 130 years old is destroyed. Vandalism at the palace is rare, but NOT unheard of. Still.. Security is not likely to change much. It's our TOP STORY at 6... A boarded up door-- on the front of iolani palace.....A very visble reminder of a palace break in over the weekend. This is how things looked around 8:30 sunday morning...... after a couple allegedly kicked in the 130 year old glass-- the tint on the windows kept the glass from falling, but the door popped open. KIPPEN 9:20THE FACT THAT OUR THREE GUARDS WERE ON THIS IMMEDIATELY ONCE THE FRONT DOOR WAS BREACHED THE ALARM SOUNDED THEY FOLLOWED THEIR EMERGENCY PROCEDURES ISOLATED THE COUPLE VERY QUICKLY AND GOT THEM OUT OF THE PALACE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE 9:33 On an adjacent door you can faintly see what palace officials believe is one of the suspect's footprints. They believe the suspects tried to kick in this window first ..... But it didn't break. That's because it was replaced 30 years ago in a previous act of vandalism. De Alba Chu says the security we see today came as a result of the 1984 incident..... He says there is not much more they can do. KIPPEN 9;56 ITS A FINE BALANCE BETWEEN COMMUNITY ACCESS AND PRESERVATIO N 10:01 KIPPEN 9:36 OTHER THAN THAT WE CANT PUT BARS ON THE WINDOWS IT WOULDN'T LOOK LIKE IOLANI PALACE AND THAT'S NOT WHAT KING KALAKAUA WANTED. 9:45 Palace Curator Heather Diamond is now on the hunt to find the right replacement. In 1984 an international search took nearly 4 years HEATHER 6:15:52-6:16:04 IT TOOK A VERY LONG TIME TO FIND THE RIGHT KINDS OF GLASS THE RIGHT COLOR THE GLASS AS YOU KNOW WAS CRYSTAL WITH AHIGH LEAD CONTENT SO THIS ORIGINAL GLASS IS NOT EASY TO FIND Luckily former curator Jim Bartels kept a detailed record of that search... She found two companies who were instrumental.. HEATHER 18:09-18:20 I FOUND OUT BOTH OF THE COMPANIES ARE STILL IN EXISTANCE BUT WE NEED TO BO GACK AND SEE IF THE CRAFTMEN ARE STILL AROUND that's A ERY LONG TIME AND WHTHER OR NOT THAT PARTICULAR TEACHING HAS BEEN PASSED DOWN Palace officials will be re- examining the130-year old locks on the doors. They have no idea how much it will cost to replace the glass. The cost was 13-thousand dollars 30 years ago Police arrested two people in connection with the case. Koa Alii Keaulana and Drew Paahao were charged with outstanding warrants in connection with other cases.... and released pending further investigation in the Iolani Palace Vandalism Case.
