HTA to put controversial artwork back on display

 UPDATED 5:24 PM HST Sep 19, 2013

The Hawaii Tourism Authority announced Thursday that a piece of artwork created by Hans Ladislaus will be put back on display at the Hawai'i Convention Center.

Earlier this month, the HTA covered the mural after some Native Hawaiians were offended by it.

HTA CEO Mike McCartney says there is now a mutual understanding.

"This mutual agreement was based on sincere mutual respect between the involved parties and includes continuing discussions with the involved parties to further their understanding and appreciation of the various perspectives raised during this process," said McCartney.

A protest planned for Saturday at the Hawai'i Convention Center is now expected to be cancelled.

Ladislaus is planning to visit Hawaii to meet with anyone who is offended to explain the meaning of his artwork, according to his attorney.
