Ward Village high-rises to front-load affordable units
The Howard Hughes Corporation is looking forward.
It might be the new kid in town, but it's making bold plans to become a fixture for the future.
Expect to see three new towers going up next year with an early emphasis on affordable units since the demand is high.
"We have a great opportunity to build more and to deliver to the community a lot of workforce housing that will satisfy not just this phase but future phases of Ward Village," said Nick Vanderboom, vice-president of development.
Those future phases include a total of 22 new high-rises covering 60 acres.
Construction will start with one tower at the corner of Ward and Halekawila Streets.
It will include 900 units of the workforce housing available to families making between $80 and $120 thousand a year.
"If you are working family two people working with a couple of kids, this is where you are going to be able to come, this is where you will have a home," said Gov. Neil Abercrombie.
The second tower will be where Pier One Imports is currently located.

The store will be moved next door to the complex that now houses TJ Maxx and the new Nordstrom Rack.
"We are going to increase our retail space from 650,000 feet to over a million, effectively doubling it,” said David Striph, senior vice-president for Howard Hughes Corporation Hawaii.
That translates to opportunities for jobs and small businesses.
The company says the third tower will go in a corner lot across from the Ward Theatres. It's now used for parking.
The high-rises will be situated Mauka-Makai to preserve views.
The company will submit its application to the Hawaii Community Development Authority this week and public hearings will follow.
The company says it has learned from mistakes of other developers who ran into delays after the discovery of iwi during construction and plans to conduct archeological surveys and include area cultural descendants in the process.
The announcement comes the same week as HCDA is set to release details of new transit development, which allows buildings in Kakaako up to 550 and 700 feet depending on their location.
The current height limit is 400 feet.
