HONOLULU -

It was another weekend of good showings at the movie box office. Monsters University came in at number one grossing $82 million. It's followed by World War Z which grossed $66 million.

Some early screening tickets for the blockbuster starring Brad Pitt sold for as high as $50. But with movie ticket prices seemingly on the rise, there's still things you can do to cut costs.

Superman may have put an end to many movie villains, but his super powers are useless against the rising cost of movie tickets.

"If people keep paying it they're going to keep driving the prices up," says Angela Costanco, a Kailua resident.

Reports say that Regal Entertainment Group will raise its movie ticket prices sometime this year. Right now the regular ticket price at Dole Cannery is $11.

At some Consolidated theaters, prices are up to $11.50.

"I will sadly still pay for it," says Tanner Henderson, a self-proclaimed movie fanatic.

Henderson goes to one to two movies per week and says the experience outweighs its cost.

"Even right now I've got to be in the movie theater when the lights go down with the previews and I've got my popcorn with me," says Henderson.

Other moviegoers say they're priced out.

"A lot of my friends they just don't come here anymore because they have three kids and they just can't afford it anymore," says Costanco.

There are ways to get around paying a full ticket price. Aside from matinee/student/military discounts, consumers can also look for a theaters deal days. Regal Dole Cannery offers $6 movies all day on Tuesdays and discounted snacks as well.

Regal also has a loyalty program that will reward you with free movie tickets or concession items based on money you spend.

You can also save by purchasing tickets at Costco. The company sells pairs of unrestricted movie passes for Regal theaters for $16.79.

Perhaps the best way to save money on movie tickets is to buy in bulk online. Purchasing 50 non-restricted tickets from Regal Entertainment Group's website will cost you $8 each.

Consolidated theaters has a similar deal but its tickets do carry restrictions.

If you're more of the "just show up" type of person, Kailua might have your answer. Water Gardens Keolu is the only discount movie theater on Oahu. Prices for tickets are just $5.50 anytime of the day.

Ticket prices are lower because these movies have been out for several weeks but you still see some blockbusters. Currently showing at Water Gardens are "The Great Gatsby," "Iron Man 3," "Oblivion" and more.
