A Kauai family is homeless after Monday morning blaze in Anahola.
Firefighters responded shortly after 5 a.m. and found nearly half of a house on Kawelo Street in flames. A family of six, including four children, lived inside the home. Gwendalynn Ruiz was lucky that none of her children were injured, but she's still in shock after what she saw.
“I heard my brother frantically yelling. I opened up my door and I saw flames coming from the side of my house,” said Ruiz. “I just ran back into my house, told my husband, [and] grabbed my kids.”
The Red Cross is helping the family.
A man in his 20s was taken to Wilcox Hospital for non-life threatening injuries and was later released.
Investigators are still trying to determine how the fire started. Kauai fire officials estimate the damage at $210,000.
