An alleged drunk driver ran into a Honolulu police officer's car, leaving the officer in critical condition. Clevis Mahi and Kimo Peroff were hanging outside Friday night. It was 11:20 p.m. when they saw a car speed past them going north down Farrington Highway in Makaha.
"He was going guaranteed almost 100 mph, he was flying," said witness Kimo Peroff.
Police said a white Mercedes ran into the back of a Honolulu police officer's SUV. The officer's car rolled over, then crashed into a home's brick wall. Witnesses said after hitting the officer's car, the white Mercedes veered left and ended up hitting a Dodge truck going the opposite direction down Farrington Highway. Mahi and neighbors ran over to flip over the SUV that was lying on its roof.
"We flipped over the vehicle and then my friend went inside and we saw a badge on top of stuff," said Mahi.
"I grabbed a big brick, threw it through the window. Air bags were covering the window, we couldn't see so we ripped the air bag. The cop was in the back, in the third-row seat. He was busted, he was mangled," said Kimo.
Paramedics say the officer in his 30s was taken to the hospital in critical condition. The 33-year-old male driver of the Mercedes was taken to the hospital in serious condition, his passenger, a woman in her 30s, was transported in serious to critical condition. Witnesses said a 4-year-old boy in the Dodge truck had a gash on his head. EMS said he was taken to the hospital in stable condition.
The driver of the Mercedes was arrested for driving a vehicle while intoxicated. The accident is still under investigation.
