Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell says public restrooms at Maunalua Bay should be back open soon.
The restrooms were shut down back in 2011 when the city was forced to close it due to a federal mandate to update the cesspool system.
Caldwell says residents are demanding that the bathroom get up and running again.
The area is heavily used by canoe paddling groups and other outdoor recreational users. He says crews ran into some delays, but are now at the tail end of construction.
"Because you are at sea level, we had to make sure what we were doing was all correct from an environmental prospect," said Caldwell. "Then we had to get under a state highway, a major highway, and then we had to deal with the private sewer system."
Caldwell says the bathroom repairs will be completed next month.
