A Kauai man convicted of intimidating witnesses against him in a domestic violence case was sentenced to five years behind bars Thursday.
Jesse Olanolan, 43 of Hanalei, received the open prison term from Fifth Circuit Chief Judge Randal G. B. Valenciano.
Olanolan plead no contest to the 2010 domestic violence charge.
Prosecutors had hoped that Olanolan receive consecutive terms for the separate charges. This is based on Olanolan's extensive criminal history, which includes 80 arrests and 38 convictions, as well as his repeated history of failing at probation.
"Although the Court denied our request for consecutive terms, we are pleased that Mr. Olanolan will finally face meaningful consequences for his crimes," stated Prosecuting Attorney Justin F. Kollar. "This defendant has created a lot of problems on the North Shore. Removing him from the community is unfortunately the only way to ensure public safety."
