Hawaii State Health Director Loretta Fuddy died four days ago following a plane crash off Molokai.
A public memorial service has been set for Dec. 21 at 9 a.m. at St. Theresa Co-Cathedral in Kalihi.
Her church family mourned the loss of the public figure, celebrating Fuddy's life Sunday morning.
The choir at St. Theresa Co-Cathedral sang joyful songs at mass, but they also sang with sadness in their hearts without longtime choir member Fuddy.
"We have special seating set up for her, with a lei and picture, so we can remember her," said Lloree Gamiao, the executive assistant with St. Theresa Co-Cathedral.
Fuddy helped St. Theresa Co-Cathedral with more than just her voice, parishioners said she put her heart into everything she did with the church.
"Besides the choir, she was on our school board, finance council and she was a confidant. If we ever needed anything she was there," said Gamiao.
Duringmass, Fuddy's kindness and good deeds were shared with the entire parish.
"We lost one of the pillars of this parish. A faithful, committed, generous parishioner," said Father Gregorio Honorio.
"She always cared. She was compassionate and thoughtful. No matter what was going on in her life, she always took the time to ask how we were and where we were at and how she could help," said Gamiao.
As part of the service, the choir sang two of Fuddy's favorite songs.
While she is no longer there physically, members of St. Theresa Co-Cathedral said they still felt her presence.
"We know she is with us in spirit," said Gamiao.
Funeral services are planned for Fuddy on Saturday December 21. It will also be held at St. Theresa Co-Cathedral on North School Street.
Visitations begin at 9 a.m. with the mass service at 11 a.m. The services are open to the public, but the burial will be a private ceremony.
