We tend to think of PTSD - Post Traumatic Stress Disorder -- as a condition that affects war veterans. But more than 5 million americans suffer from PTSD... many don't even know it. There is now free help for people here in Hawaii - ...and tonight we introduce you to one woman who says it changed her life. Joy Albaro has carried a burden with her for years... Trauma she suffered as a child has stayed with her... DEFINED her... No matter how hard she's tried to heal. 1439 TENS OF THOUSANDS OF HOURS OF PSYCHOTHERAP Y, PAST LIFE REGRESSION, HYNOTHERAPY, NLP TECHNIQUES, 47 None of it worked. The hurt ate away at her. 2006 IT'S KIND OF LIKE A HIDDEN DEMON INSIDE OF YOU, AND YOU CAN'T FIGURE IT OUT. YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT IT IS. 2012 Then she met clinical psychologist Dr. Nancy Cha. Dr. Cha helped Albaro discover...she had PTSD. 2530 MEMORIES THAT POP IN YOUR MIND, YOU FEEL LIKE YOU'RE RELIVING THINGS OR EVEN NIGHTMARES, THAT CAUSE SOMEBODY TO BE AMPED UP OR KEYED UP OR ON GUARD, THOSE MIGHT CAUSE SOMEONE TO AVOID PEOPLE, PLACES OR SITUATIONS OR MAYBE EVEN FEEL NUMB? 43 Many veterans can relate. They suffer those symptoms after returning from war. But PTSD is not unique to the battlefield. 48 SOMETHING LIKE COMBAT, SEXUAL ASSAULT, ASSAULT OF ANY KIND, A NATURAL DISASTER. MOST PEOPLE ARE GOING TO HAVE A REACTION TO SOMETHING LIKE THAT, MOST PEOPLE WILL HAVE ANXIETY, MAYBE MEMORIES ABOUT IT. PTSD IS WHEN THESE REACTIONS PERSIST, AND START TO INTERFERE WITH YOUR LIFE. 106 The PTSD diagnosis can help not only patients, but also their loved ones. 455 IT CAN BE EXTREMLY THERAPEUTIC FOR A FAMILY MEMBER TO KNOW THAT MY PARTNER, OR MY DAD OR WHOEVER IT MAY BE IS IRRITABLE, OR HAS A HARD TIME FEELING FEELINGS IS IN FACT BECAUSE HE'S STRUGGLING WITH PTSD. 510 Dr. Leslie Morland is Deputy Director for the National Center for PTSD - part of the Department of Veterans Affairs. She and Dr. Cha are now part of a team, offering free help for island women, as part of a federally funded clinical trial. The treatment is 12 one-on-one and they say the key is targeted therapy. 2424 WHAT WE REALLY WANT TO GET TO IS THE ACCURATE PICTURE OF WHAT HAPPENED, THE ACCEPTANCE OF WHAT HAPPENED AND THEN ULTIMATELY BEING ABLE TO EXPERIENCE THOSE NATURAL EMOTIONS THAT ALLOW SOMEONE TO RECOVER AND HEAL. 2434 For Albaro, the diagnosis and healing that followed..has been remarkable. 1846 I DIDN'T KNOW I HAD PTSD, I DIDN'T REALIZE I WAS TRAUMATIZED. 1848 BECAUSE OF THE TREATMENT, MY WHOLE LIFE HAS CHANGED. DRAMATICALLY. IT'S LIKE I'M A WHOLE NEW PERSON. 1858 If you're a woman who might be suffering from PTSD - the National Centers for PTSD is still making that free therapy session series available.
