Driver of fatal Pali crash was drunk
Family of 13-year-old victim makes appeal
"We went to go put flowers in remembrance of her. We don’t quite understand where, when and how it happened, but we have seen what we have seen, and it's sad," said Jerica Kalama.
Kalama says it’s like a bad dream. She still can't believe her baby sister Kamalani won't be coming home.
On May 5, Mark Garcia sped up the Pali, according to police.
He lost control of his truck, flipping it as it hit the embankment, killing Kalama who was a passenger in the car, and critically injuring his own 15-year-old daughter, Denay.
The Kalamas are heartbroken.
They are also angry to learn that Garcia's blood alcohol level was .123, well above the .08 legal limit.
They reached out with this message:
"Life is precious and when you have someone else child in your hands you should be responsible as taking that extra step and be cautious" said Kalama.
They can’t say enough about the outpouring of love and support from family and friends during this ordeal.

They are proud of their little girl, a Kailua eighth-grader who the school said was a mediator among her peers.
Her principal dropped off her report card -- a 3.8 grade point average -- a shining star.
"She was always that bubbly, crazy kid who would make you laugh when you were having the worst day," Kalama said.
They hope the death of their happy-go-lucky teen will make an impact at a time when the NTSB is calling for stricter drunk driving limits.
"Drinking and driving is wrong. Take that extra precaution when you have someone else's child with you. Be that responsible parent:
Somebody else child is in your hands and they are trusting you,” said Kalama.
A message too late, for the Garcia and Kalama families, but hopefully one that may save another life.
Funeral services for Kalama will be held at the end of the month.
The family said that 15-year-old Denay Garcia has been released from the hospital, but now must deal with the loss of her father and friend.
