WAIPIO, Hawaii -

Getting our kupuna out of the house and active -- that's the goal of a new initiative outside of town on Oahu.

The Honolulu Recreation Department hosted the first Senior Fun Walk Friday morning.

About 100 seniors laced up their shoes for the 1-mile walk around the Central Oahu Regional Park, also known as Patsy Mink Park.

The city says it hosted the free walk as an incentive to get seniors physically and socially active.

"Anything to get the social aspect going because while they are walking, they are talking and that's the best.  You can see all the seniors hanging out," said Recreation Specialist Steven Santiago.

"I'm glad we have it and I hope we can continue doing it because many of us seniors on this side of the island don't get to do something like this," said Mililani resident Connie Aruda.  "It's always in town, so this is very nice."

The city says it plans on doing just that -- hosting a senior walk every year.
