Chopper overturns in hard landing near Hilo airport
No injuries reported; Passenger believes helicopter ran out of fuel
Hilo police say a tour helicopter ended up on its side in a hard or forced landing near the entrance to Hilo International Airport Thursday.
It happened at around 1:15 p.m.
There were four passengers on the chopper along with the pilot. No injuries were reported. Police say the chopper involved is from Paradise Helicopters.
Hawaii County Civil Defense says the landing took place on a grassy area near Airport Road and Kanoelehua Avenue.
The Federal Aviation Administration says the tour helicopter declared an emergency due to engine failure. A passenger on board the chopper says he believes the helicopter ran out of fuel.
Paradise Helicopters cancelled the rest of the flights for the day.
