Burned Kauai post office unlikely to be rebuilt

HONOLULU -

U.S. Postal Service officials say they're unlikely to rebuild a full-service post office in the Kauai town of Hanamaulu near Lihue after a fire destroyed the last one.

The old post office operated out of the Hanamaulu Trading Company building for more than a century. The wooden, two-story building burned in December.

USPS representative Jodi Nascimento says the postal service must cut costs to cope with declining revenue and mail volume.

She says one option would be for a village post office in an existing Hanamaulu retail store to provide basic retail, mail collection and package receiving services.

The Garden Island newspaper reported other branch offices or contract postal units would handle mail delivery and post office boxes.

Some residents are worried this would harm the town's elderly.
