Brush fire closes Hilo road; destroys home
No home occupants were found
Big Island police say a fire in the Keaukaha area of Hilo caused the closure of Kalaniana'ole Avenue for several hours Thursday.
At approximately 8:18 a.m., South Hilo patrol officers responded to a report of a fire on the 1900 block of Kalaniana'ole Avenue.
Upon arrival, they found an older single-family dwelling and surrounding shrubbery burning and Fire Department personnel fighting the flames.
Fire officials say the home was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived. The fire apparatus could not get into the driveway because it was too narrow, according to fire officials. The driveway was also about 225-feet-long.
There were no occupants in the house at the time of the fire.
Due to the location, traffic was stopped all the way to Richardson Beach Park until firefighters were able to bring the fire under control. The road was reopened at 12:30 p.m.
Fire Department personnel are investigating the cause of the fire.
Damage is estimated at $45,000.
