Big Island fire officials say the body of a man was found in the rubble after crews extinguished a fire that destroyed a home in the Hawaiian Ocean View Estates Monday night.
Firefighters were called to Bamboo Lane just after 9 p.m. When crews arrived, they found the home engulfed in flames.
Fire crews were able to bring the flames under control within 20 minutes. However, the fire wasn't fully extinguished until after midnight because the nearest water source was about 4 miles away and had to be shuttled in, according to fire officials.
After the fire was extinguished, firefighters found the remains of an unidentified man.
Police have initiated a coroner's inquest. An autopsy has been scheduled for Wednesday to determine the exact cause of death and to identify the deceased.
The case of the fire is under investigation.
