HONOLULU -

An explosive device,  thrown into a families home in the dead of the night.

A Kaimuki family says they have no idea why someone would target their home and try to set it on fire.

James Lopes says he's baffled why someone would do it.

"I hope they find the guy," Lopes told KITV Friday. "That's uncool to do that for I don't know what reason."

Throw what some call a molotov cocktail into his family's home on Claudine Street.

"I guess we’re the cIosest house to the road so he could just and and disappear on the moped," Lopes added.

The family says it was a beer bottle filled with some kind of flammable liquid, and it came flying through the kitchen window around 1:30 Friday morning.

"They pulled the cabinet out to put out the fire and there was a piece on the roof. We shot that down with the water hose," Lopes said. "We just tried to contain it before the whole thing caught on fire."

James is crediting a young man who was up the street visiting his girlfriend for saving the lives of his family.

"Someone up the road who saw it came down and woke us up and tried to ctach the guy. But the guy disappeared on his moped," Lopes said.

The family dog also getting some credit for waking the family with his barking.

The fire caused $5,000 in damage, but could have been much worse.

The case is now in the hands of the police who have opened an arson investigation.

Police don't have much of a description of a suspect to work with, but they're looking for a man on a moped wearing a hoodie.

If you have any information on the case, call police.
