A popular Kailua restaurant expands
Cinnamon's opening a Toyko restaurant
Business has been sweet for Cinnamon's in Kailua, as customers line up for breakfast creations every day.
Now the local eatery is cooking up something new -- a brand restaurant.
Cinnamon's has stacked up a reputation for trying new things, especially when it comes to pancakes.
"We started by making a carrot pancake. I always thought what you make into a cake or cookie, you could turn into a pancake," said chef Carsie Green.
That experimentation led to unique creations like red velvet or guava chiffon pancakes, popular items customers have gobbled up.
"We have tried every restaurant on the island and this is our favorite. We are lucky we live in Kailua cause it is in our neighborhood," said Kailua resident Maggie Joy.
Soon, there will also be a Cinnamon's across the Pacific.
A new restaurant opens in Toyko on Aug. 26.
Local owners found many in Japan have a hunger for all things Hawaiian and that is not the only thing they hunger for.
"Japanese interest in Hawaii started with the hula and music. Now there is a huge interest in anything from Hawaii. There is also a huge interest in breakfast. They are going bananas, literally, for pancakes," said Cinnamon's co-owner Puna Nam.
Because their new restaurant will be in a different country, Nam said there will be some changes to their traditional local menu -- except when it comes to their popular red velvet pancakes.
"That's our No. 1 seller. So, the red velvet and guava chiffon pancakes will be two of the items they will definitely have," said Nam.
Because some local ingredients will be hard to come by, not all of its popular pancakes will be featured. The Toyko menu will also include some Japanese items, but Cinnamon's owners said everything will still be served up like things in Kailua.
"Our food is made fresh made daily and made with love," said Green.
"The staff is outstanding. They are very accommodating and just wonderful," said Kailua resident Noni Causey.
In the future, Nam said Cinnamon's may also expand to other parts of Oahu or the neighbor islands.
In the meantime, it has come out with new chocolate pancakes made with chocolate chips, and covered in chocolate sauce and shavings.
