A man in his mid-40s was hospitalized in critical condition after a head-on collision on the H-2 freeway heading into Mililani early Thursday morning, according to Emergency Medical Services officials.

The crash involved two cars near the Mililani Town off-ramp at around 5:15 a.m.

EMS officials say it appeared the sports utility vehicle was traveling in the wrong direction on the northbound lanes of the H-2 Freeway.  The driver in critical condition was in the brown pickup truck.

The driver of the SUV, a man in his mid-30s, was taken into custody by Honolulu police.

The northbound lanes of the freeway were initially closed for the investigation.  The lanes were reopened just before 9 a.m.
