Honolulu police say a 34-year-old woman died Thursday morning after she was hit by vehicle in Waimanalo.

It happened on Kalanianaole Highway near the Waimanalo Town Center shortly after 1 a.m.

The woman was initially taken to the hospital in extremely critical condition.

Police say the driver tried to stop but didn't see the woman until it was too late.

Police say speed or alcohol didn't appear to be involved in the crash.

The highway was closed for more than three hours between Poalima Street and Moole Street while police investigated.

The road was reopened at around 4:30 a.m.
