According to the state Department of Education, a student at Waimea Canyon Middle School, who was upset by the alleged theft of a personal item on Wednesday, brought a knife into the classroom Thursday morning and made verbal threats.
The boy's teacher and school staff quickly calmed the student down, took the knife away, and escorted him to an administrative office. The student was then released to authorities.
No one was hurt in the incident.
The school administration and staff came to the classroom where the incident occurred to allay the students' concerns.
The school and Mokihana counselors were standing by and were ready to assist the students and school staff who needed their support.
Upon notification of the incident, the school’s Crisis Management Operation Team assembled to assess the situation and to take the necessary measures to ensure everyone’s safety.
A letter to the parents explaining what occurred today was sent home with the students.
Kauai police was contacted later Thursday morning and provided their support.
