Waimea schools take precautions with lockdown
Police: Stranger seen chasing a 10-year-old boy on Waimea Elementary campus
Waimea Elementary and Middle School were in lockdown Friday morning as a precaution, according to school officials.
A child at the elementary school reported an incident just before classes began at 8 a.m., according to a Waimea Middle School official.
Big Island police say a man had been seen chasing a 10-year-old boy on the campus of Waimea Elementary. A different student reported the incident.
Both schools went into lockdown and Big Island police were called. Officers were doing training nearby and were able to get there quickly.
Other schools in the area went into lockdown, based on the response in Waimea.
The "all clear" was given at around 8:35 a.m. Police determined that the man on campus was a relative of the boy and they had been playing.
School officials say they have a lot of practice with lockdowns and they are taking extra precautions and being safe.
