A 67-year-old man has become the latest traffic fatality on Oahu.

It happened on Farrington Highway and Hakimo Road in Waianae just before 6 a.m. Saturday. 

According to police, Filito Tui, 67, was sitting on the guard rail along Farrington Highway when he leaned forward and stumbled, right into the path of an on-oming city bus.  Tui was struck by the bus and run over by its back tires.

Louis Lee and his family live across from the site of the crash.  He said he woke up to the sounds of emergency vehicle sirens.

"They just closed one side of the road.  The bus was over there and had all the policemen and ambulance. The fire truck came later to shoot down the blood or whatever was on the corner over there," said Lee. 

He says he and his sons witnessed the dangers of walking along the busy highway almost every day.

"The road is kind of screwed up right here. So if drivers come and they're going fast, they hit the potholes and you lose control," said Lee. 

Speeding isn't the only concern residents have. The amount of space for pedestrians along Farrington Highway is only about five feet across. 

"They're speeding and riding the shoulder. They go off the lane so when we get off the beach, I push the (crosswalk) button and tell (his sons) to wait around the corner so they don't get hit," said Lee. 

Miklynn Lee said this latest fatality supports her claim that the road is too close to sidewalks and bus stops. 

"If (Tui) can stumble and get run over, my concern is school is coming up in two Tuesdays from now. The kids, they wait too close to the curb," said Lee.  "If we can have them wait at least one house in from the road and wait until the school bus pulls up and then for the kids to walk up, because if it can happen to any person, it can happen to one of our kids."
