Family loses home to fire
A house fire in Waianae has displaced three people after the fire destroyed the single-story building.
Honolulu Fire Spokesman, Captain James Todd says the fire was first reported at 7:10pm Saturday. When firefighters arrived, they found the house engulfed in flames. The three people inside had managed to safely evacuate on their own.
Neighbor Wayne Tavares saw the flames on his way home, and arrived before the first fire crew. "The flames were as high as a telephone poll," Tavares said. Firefighters reported the fire extinguished at 8pm.
Captain Todd said initial damage estimates to the home include $320,000 for the structure, and $50,000 for the belongings inside. The Red Cross is helping the three residents with shelter, and other immediate needs.
Investigators plan to return to the scene Sunday to determine a cause.
