An Alaska man died Sunday night after suffering critical injuries when his outrigger canoe flipped over near the Kaiser's surf break in Waikiki.
The Honolulu Medical Examiner identified the man as 50-year-old Lane Maalona of Anchorage, Alaska.
An autopsy is being conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
According to police and emergency medical officials, Maalona ran into trouble just after 5 p.m. Sunday between the Kaiser's surf break and the ocean outside the Hilton Hawaiian Village Lagoon.
He was initially transported to Straub Hospital in critical condition where he later died shortly before midnight.
Police are currently classifying the case as an unattended death, but are continuing to investigate the incident.
