Waikiki Sand Project timelapse
An award tonight for the latest Waikiki Beach Replenishment Project.
It was a big job for the state, recovering some 24,000 cubic yards of sand from offshore deposits and bringing it back to the beach.
The UH Oceanography Department captured images of the work and put together a time lapse video.
It shows trucks carrying load after load of sand from the Kuhio end of the beach toward the Royal Hawaiian Hotel where the sand was spread out.
The $2.2 million job slowed erosion making the beach thicker and up to 40 feet wider in areas.
The Hawaii Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers though so much of the project it has been named Best Special Engineering Project in Hawaii in 2012.
