UPDATE: Search for missing surfer suspended after surfboard owner found

The Coast Guard called off their search Friday for a possible missing surfer near Diamond Head after the owner of a surfboard contacted the Coast Guard.

According to the Coast Guard, the owner saw photos of her surfboard on local news, and contacted them to confirm that the board had recently been lost while surfing.

The Coast Guard says it is trying to locate the owner of a surfboard found approximately 2.5 miles southwest of Diamond Head on Thursday.

No one was reported to be in distress.  The surfboard was found with a broken leash by the crew of a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium from Coast Guard Station Honolulu, who were conducting training in the area.

In light of this situation and the effort put into finding the owner of the board, Coast Guard officials urge all water men and women to label their water crafts with personal contact information to make it easier to locate them.
