UPDATE: Driver identified in fatal Maui collision
Two trucks collided head on early Wednesday morning on Honoapiilani Highway
One man is dead and another seriously injured after a head-on collision on Honoapiilani Highway in Maui.
The collision happened near the Olowalu landfill at 6:19 a.m. Wednesday.
The collision involved two pick-up trucks, a white 2001 Toyota Tacoma and a red 1989 Mazda B2200 .
According to traffic investigators, the collision happened when the driver of the Mazda attempted to overtake another vehicle while heading south on the highway.
The driver of the Mazda, 20-year-old Blaze K. Kalilikane of Lahaina, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing his seat belt and his truck apparently was not equipped with airbags.
The 37-year-old driver of the Tacoma received injuries to his right leg, and was transported in stable condition to Maui Memorial Medical Center. He was wearing his seat belt and both his airbags deployed.
There were no other occupants in either truck.
Police closed down the main highway for several hours, rerouting traffic on the nearby cane-haul road.
Despite the rerouting, the closure caused significant delay for West Maui travelers.
