UH athletics director placed on 'indefinite administrative leave of absence'

 UPDATED 5:44 PM HST Jul 11, 2012

University of Hawaii Athletics Director Jim Donovan has been placed on an "Indefinite Administrative Leave of Absence" with pay.

The decision was announced by UH President MRC Greenwood and UH Manoa Chancellor Tom Apple at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.

This also affects Rich Sheriff, manager of the Stan Sheriff Center.  Together, they were the front men in an attempt to put on a fundraising concert featuring 25-time Grammy winner Stevie Wonder.

On Tuesday, Donovan announced the planned August 18 concert was cancelled and the school would have to refund about 6,000 tickets sold.

"The University has been informed by Stevie Wonder's agent, Creative Artists Agency that the artist is not available for an August 18, 2012 concert. The event was booked by an authorized third party without the knowledge and consent of Mr. Wonder's representatives," said Donovan in a Tuesday press conference.

UH reportedly put down as much as $200,000 for the concert.  The FBI is included in this investigation.

In the interim, UH Vice-President Rockne Freitas will be the acting UH athletics director.
