Two teens swept into ocean by a large wave
One in hospital; other teen still missing
A 15-year-old boy from New York, Tyler Madoff, is missing after a large wave washed him and another teen out to sea.
The Coast Guard said the search for the teen was suspended at sunset Thursday evening, until there are new developments.
This happened on the Kona side of the Big Island near Kealakekua Bay around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.
"He was part of an adventure tour hiking when they decided to take a break at some nearby tide pools," said Lt. Lee Cotterell with the U.S. Coast Guard. "While they were in the tide pools a large wave came in and swept two of the kids out to sea."
A tour guide jumped in and saved one of the boys. Brent Sasaki was fishing nearby when he saw the guide jump in and went to help.
“I went with my boat to pick them up and bring them aboard,” said Sasaki.
Sasaki rushed the teen and the guide to shore and went back out to search for the second teen.
"I gotta get back out there and try to rescue somebody else. I searched up and down that place," said Sasaki. Despite his efforts, Madoff is still missing.
