Kalanianaole Highway remains closed and power still out to over a dozen customers in Waimanalo after a a tumultuous car crash sent one man to the hospital in critical condition early Wednesday morning.
According to police, it happened at 3:27 a.m. when a mini-van crashed into a parked car, impacting a utility pole before rolling into the front yard of a home at 410849 Kalanianaole Highway near the 711 store.
Neighbors say police were able to remove a person from the mini-van, described as a man in his 20's, and deliver him to the care of Emergency Medical Services. He was transported in critical condition.
Police say that injured man had told them that he was not the driver, and that the driver had fled the scene after the crash. The victim was the owner of the min-ivan.
Police added that the red min-ivan, initially heading in the Kailua bound direction, involved in the crash may have been speeding prior to the series of crashes.
Another neighbor, whose parked car was impacted by the minivan, says the location of his car may have saved his life. "if my car wasn't sitting here at the time of impact, that van that hit my neighbors yard would have been in my house," said Ace Aiu.
He added that this particular part of the highway sees its fair share of crashes. "It happens a lot at this corner lot here that I'm at," Aiu added. "Numerous times they came through the lot in the corner because now they're whipping around the corner. They have hit the bus stop about ten times not. It's constantly really bad."
The large family that lives in the home impacted by the crash was home at the time but was not injured.
Police are rerouting traffic along Kalanianaole Highway while the scene is cleared and Hawaiian Electric workers repair the impacted utility pole.
Traffic is being re-routed to Walea and Puuone Streets on the Makai side of Kalanianaole Highway and Oluolu St. on the Mauka.
HECO officials say about 1,500 customers initially lost power, with about half of those regaining power about an hour later. 14 customers are still without power Wednesday morning. They are unsure when the repairs will be complete and power will be completely restored.
