Here's another reason we are so lucky we live Hawaii... Tonight, much of the country is shivering in a record-breaking arctic blast. In addition to the deep freeze, millions are battling a crippling mix of wintry weather. KITV4's Justin Fujioka went to the airport today to talk to people traveling to and from the Mainland. Bernadette Lemons is happy to be back in Hawaii for the first time in 18 years. She says she timed it just right. Bernadette Lemons: "THIS IS THE BEST TIME WE COULD HAVE CHOSEN TO COME HERE. THIS IS GREAT TO BE OUT OF THE COLD WEATHER." She over-nighted in Portland... and woke up to a record cold 19-degrees there! Fellow passenger Bo Matu was equally cold this morning and equally delighted by our 80-degrees. Bo Matu: "COMING FROM A COLD TO A, TO A WARM WEATHER LIKE THIS IS LIKE, IS AMAZING. ITS ALREADY PAID OFF OUR VACATION ALREADY." And it's not just visitors appreciating our weather, former U-H football player Chad Owens says he couldn't have come home soon enough. Chad Owens: "YOU KNOW, BEING IN TORONTO FOR THE SEASON, IT GETS COLD TOWARDS THE END OF THE YEAR AND I JUST CAME FROM PORTLAND VISITING MY MOM AND IT STARTED GETTING PRETTY CHILLY. SO, WE DEFINITELY LOOK FORWARD TO COMING BACK TO THIS WEATHER." Justin Fujioka: "SO NOW THAT WE HAVE A LITTLE BIT OF AN IDEA OF HOW COLD IT IS ON THE MAINLAND, LET'S HEAD UPSTAIRS TO DEPARTURES TO SEE IF PASSENGERS HEADING THERE ARE READY FOR THE ARCTIC BLAST." Glen Johnson: "I HAVE A SWEATER AND A JACKET IN BAG HERE. SHE HAS HER UGGS FOR HER FEET AND A COAT AND WHATNOT IN OUR CAR BACK AT THE AIRPORT." Glen Johnson says he and his family are not ready to return home to Washington state to brave an unusually early cold blast. Local boy Derrick Jones says nothing can prepare him for that! Derrick Jones: "I'M PROBABLY GOING TO HAVE BUY A THERMAL, DRINK HOT CHOCOLATE AND COFFEES EVERYDAY." At the Honolulu International Airport, Justin Fujioka, KITV4 News.
