KITV4's Brenton Awa is just back from a community meeting to address the traffic problem at Laniakea Beach. Brenton? Yunji -- There was a lot of tension at tonights "talk story" community meeting. Residents have been dealing with this traffic issue at "turtle beach" for years and they say something has to happen soon. Whether its surf -- or turtles. When there's a crowd at Laniakea beach -- one things for certain... NATS HONKING There's traffic too. 4400 "WHEN THERE'S TRAFFIC IT'S JUST MISERABLE, YOU'RE JUST SITTING THERE WATCHING NEAR ACCIDENTS, TOURISTS ALMOST GETTING RUN OVER." Residents say the problem is getting old -- the Department of Transportation has heard their complaints. 4228 - 4237 - 5PM "THE COMMUNITY IS REALLY GETTING TIRED OF IT AND THEY'RE LETTING US KNOW THAT THEY'RE JUST TIRED OF THIS TRAFFIC AND ALL THE BACK-UPS" 4414 "IT'S JUST GOT WORSE AND WORSE IT USED TO JUST BE SEASONAL WHEN PEOPLE WERE OUT HERE FOR THE SURF OR TURTLES AND NOW IT'S JUST REACHED A BREAKING POINT." A talk story meeting a Sunset Elementary held this evening -- Standing room only. Representative Richard Fale and others took questions on paper. Some residents -- are tired of that too. 3720 - NATS YELLING "WE ARE NOT HERE TO DISCUSS THIS WAY..." Many questions on solutions were asked. Including -- why not have HPD step up its traffic enforcement... Or why not use a bridge to cross the highway. But the number question many responded to... 3354 - let SOT flow into crowd yelling "WHY NOT MOVE THE ROAD WHERE THE PARKING LOT IS AND MOVE THE PARKING LOT TO WHERE THE ROAD IS?" 3421 "THAT IS THE LIABILITY THAT THE STATE IS NOT WILLING TO TAKE IN YET THOSE DISCUSSIONS STALLED." Event organizers say there's only two immediate solutions that the City and State can agree on. One is putting in cross-walks. The other -- placing barriers to block off the parking lot completely to reduce the amount of pedestrians crossing. Some don't agree with the short term solution. 4537 "IF IT COMPLETELY BLOCKS IT ITS JUST GOING TO CAUSE MORE PROBLEMS PROBABLY, THEY REALLY NEED TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO DEAL WITH THE PARKING AND WITH THE TRAFFIC." The D-O-T was not scheduled to be at tonights meeting.. However -- it does want to get the communities feedback to see whether or not residents even want to implement concrete barriers. If residents don't want it -- the D- O-T would scrap the idea. It's holding a meeting with the community task force on September 25th.
