Iwilei City Mill workers count themselves among the lucky, having escaped injury from Saturday's blown roof. Surveillance video caught a customer dodging the wind-blown debris.
The cameras caught footage of a customer who starts running, and not even a second later a wheel barrel and a roof panel fly by barely missing him.
"Sounded like thunder came rolling across. I didn't know what was happening, heard a big bang, heard a big pop, and then the power cut out," said supervisor of the City Mill Justin Perkins.
Other surveillance video shows dust beginning to swirl, huge black pipes falling to the ground, and then the roof flying into the middle of the parking lot.
"As the sound was happening, the thunder, the stuff dragging across the roof for that 15 seconds, it was really windy," said Perkins.
Poles are what is left of a large canopy that could have created a big traffic accident on the Nimitz Highway.
"It was a red light at the intersection, and it dropped right in the middle of the intersection, so luckily, no cars were damaged out there," said Perkins.
There is still a gaping hole where the roof ripped off, but crews have secured a part of it. The cost of the damage is still undetermined.
The store remained open throughout the incident. No injuries were reported, but Perkins said a couple cars had minor damages.
