State makes temporary adjustments to school bus cuts
Teachers at Mililani Middle School are back on campus preparing for Monday, when students return from summer.
However, some public school parents are making last-minute arrangements to make sure their child isn't left standing on the curb on that first day of class.
"It does make it difficult. It makes it an inconvenience to not have transportation for your kids to go to school," said public school parent Marcell Johnson.
Over the weekend, the Department of Education released its "latest" list: 2,380 students impacted, 52 routes cut.
At the Board of Education meeting Tuesday, new numbers showed 336 students and four more routes saved, two in Kapolei and two in Mililani.
However, that reprieve will only last until the end of the month to give parents of students on multi-track schedules more time to find alternative transportation.
"There was great concern that parents did not have time to find alternative ways to get to their school. So we decided we would work on so we decided we would work on extending the route service to those students through July 27," said state Superintendent Kathryn Matayoshi.
The DOE said the statewide cuts are necessary under the current budget restraints. On Saturday, the school system said it eliminated or consolidated 10 routes in Mililani.
A concern for the area's representative, who said she was unaware the DOE was so close to releasing its discontinued routes.
"The DOE and the BOE need to communicate not only with the legislature but with the community. I have no idea why it didn't happen I was taken aback by Sunday morning's newspaper and I hope that I will never happen again," said Rep. Marilyn Lee.
The DOE will operate shuttles for students attending Mililani Middle and High School. Without the shuttles, students would have to cross H-2 Freeway during heavy morning traffic.
Within the next couple of weeks, the school system will notify parents of the collections points. These are neighborhood locations where students can catch their new school bus.
