HONOLULU -

Based upon weather forecasts and radar, the Department of Land and Natural Resources' State Parks division has posted "TRAIL CLOSED" signs at the Kalalau trail head at Haena effective at 7 a.m. Friday morning.

The trail closure is a precautionary action for public safety in anticipation of a flash flood watch that will go into effect for Kauai at noon Friday.

Hikers are advised to not take the trail since they may find themselves on the far side of streams that may be subject to flash flooding, thus potentially putting themselves and county rescue personnel at risk.  Do not attempt to cross a flooded stream.   Keep to high ground and wait for the stream to subside.

Division of State Parks personnel will evaluate the weather conditions Saturday morning to decide whether to remove the trail closure sign.
