The new year means new changes at the Department of Motor Vehicles. That's because the state identification program is moving departments.
Starting in the new year state IDs will be issued through the counties instead of the Department of Attorney General.
State identification cards are used as a form of ID, particularly for people who don't have a driver's license. They also come with perks.
"There are retailers out there that offer a Kamaaina discount," said license administrator Dennis Kamimura.
The new change means you'll be able to get the IDs at driver's license locations throughout the state, but now you need to bring a lot more documentation.
"You have to prove by documentary evidence your name, date of birth, Social Security number, legal presence, and as well as your principal residence," said Kamimura.
Currently IDs cost $20 for eight years, but the cost may increase when the county implements the program.
Going to the DMV usually goes in hand-in-hand with waiting.
"I got my head sets and my music to keep me occupied," said Steven Mun-Takata who's been waiting in line.
But it might get worse.
As of Jan. 2, those who want a state ID and those who want a driver's license will wait in the same line, so the line will get even longer.
And that it something nobody is happy about.
"This rate if I don't get my license by then I don't want to stand in the line anymore it's just too long," said customer Linda Le.
If you don't like lines you might just think twice about getting that state ID.
"If you have a passport you don't really need a state ID card," said Kamimura.
But don't forget there's always another option.
"If you don't really need it, you know if the line is too long, come back another day," suggested Kamimura.
