An emotional day both for parents waiting outside and for students on lockdown. KITV-4's Ashley Moser is standing by LIVE at Roosevelt High School -- with details on how social media played a BIG role -- in getting information to worried parents. Ashley? Yunji ...I spoke with parents and students who say text messages and twitter helped them learn more about the shooting in real time. Students I spoke with say it helped keep family in the loop while they were on lockdown. Amani Torress Sophomore 17:15- 17:21 "I JUST HEARD THE TWO GUNSHOTS AND I WAS FREAKED OUT JUST WONDERING IF ANYONE WAS OKAY." Kayla Sirom Student 15:04- 15:08 "ALL OF A SUDDEN WE START HEARING GUN SHOTS...WHICH WAS TWO ...TWO TIMES." The initial reaction to a shooting and a lockdown is both predictable and understandable. Fear INSIDE Roosevelt High ... and worried parents and grandparents on the OUTSIDE. Karen Hamilton Student's Grandparent 05:16-5:23 "HE TEXT ME AND TOLD ME GRANNY I LOVE YOU. I KNOW HE'S...HE'S WORRIED CUZ HE DON'T KNOW HOW THIS GOING TO TURN OUT." Parents and loved feeling helpless... worried sick over what could happen to their children. Carolyn Richardson 14:23-14:27 "I JUST WANT TO GET HIM OUT AND TAKE HIM HOME." The lockdown lasted for about an hour and a half. Students like Roosevelt senior Jessica Yamamoto started texting right away... to anyone.... everyone. "mom are you ok?" Jessica 22:20-22:26 "IT HELPED AS FAR AS COMMUNICATION S AND STUFF GETTING BACK AND FORTH TO PARENTS AND EVEN FRIENDS AND FAMILY WHO WERE CONCERNED." Jessica says she used other social media outlets to get the latest information. Jessica 24:10-24:12 "AT FIRST I JUST CHECKED TWITTER...CUZ I JUST WANTED TO KNOW WHAT WAS GOING ON." Updates came flooding in in real time. Jessica 23:13-23:22 "WE COULD SEE AS IT WAS HAPPENING. LIKE HOW MANY POLICE CARS ARE HERE. OH THE NEWS IS COMING TO OUR SCHOOL IT MUST BE PRETTY SERIOUS." Those texts and tweets offered help and comfort. Jessica 22:2822:33 "THEY WE'RE JUST TEXTING ME SAYING IS EVERYTHING OKAY? DO YOU NEED A RIDE? YOU KNOW WE'RE HERE FOR YOU!" Relief came at 10 A-M when school officials release students. Carolyn Richardson and her son Cardero stayed in touch.. but nothing beats old school face to face!
