Several beaches closed due to high surf on Kauai, Big Island
Officials close several beaches for public safety
Several beaches on the Big Island and Kauai are closed due to high and dangerous surf.
On the Big Island, Hapuna Beach is closed since Saturday morning for public safety. DLNR officials said surf is up ten to twelve feet high, and surges were reaching far up shore even up to some lifeguard towers. Lifeguards will reassess the beach later in the day to see if it is safe to reopen.
Kauai's Fire Department's Ocean Bureau also closed several beaches on Saturday.
Beaches at Kee, Haena and Pine Trees are restricted to the public; only limited swimming is allowed at Hanalei Pier. Kauai remains in a high surf warning for North and West facing shores through 6 a.m. Sunday morning.
