Senior dies in Pali crashUPDATED 7:06 PM HST May 22, 2013Video Transcript
This is Hawaii's only Hour-long 6 o-clock newscast. The crash was somehow tragic and miraculous at the same time. KITV4's Andrew Pereira is live at the Pali Highway... Andrew what happened out there this morning? Yunji, even police are stunned this crash involved only one vehicle. Speed and this embankment proved to be deadly combo for the elderly driver. It was a rear view Randy Flores of Kaneohe will never forget. At first Flores thought he was about to be pulled over for going 45 in a 35 mile per hour zone. RANDY FLORES: "SO I PULLED OVER TO THE FAR RIGHT LANE, WHICH IS CLOSEST TO THE PEDESTRIANS." It wasn't a cop, but a speeding Acura SUV headed town bound. Flores looked back again... This time he was about to get slammed. RANDY FLORES: "AT THAT POINT I SAW IT IN MY MIRROR GET IN THE SAME LANE THAT I WAS IN THINKING THAT HE WAS GOING TO HIT MY VEHICLE. I PREPARED FOR SOME SORT OF IMPACT, AND THEN I LOST HIM IN MY FIELD OF VISION." ANDREW PEREIRA: "THE DRIVER THEN HIT THIS EMBANKMENT THAT EXTENDS FROM A BOARD OF WATER SUPPLY WELL. AND WHAT HAPPENED NEXT IS TRULY MIND BOGGLING WHEN YOU CONSIDER THE FACT THAT NO OTHER DRIVER OR BYSTANDER WAS HURT." RANDY FLORES: "IT ROLLED IN AIR AND LANDED IN FRONT OF THAT OTHER VEHICLE, THE OTHER HONDA ELEMENT." LT. BOBBY TOWNE: "THE VEHICLE ACTUALLY DID A BARRELL ROLE OVER ITS VEHICLE AND THEN LANDED ONTO THE ROADWAY 147 SOMEHOW WITHOUT STRIKING ANY OTHER VEHICLES." Police believe the 4,500 pound vehicle flew and twisted 60 yards through the air before crashing down... Rightside up... onto the Pali Highway. It then slid across all three Kailua bound lanes. The driver, a man in his late 70's, was pronounced dead at the Queen's Medical Center. His female passenger, in her late 60's, was last reported in critical condition. RANDY FLORES: "IT'S UNFORTUNATE THE INJURIES THAT WERE SUSTAINED BY THE MOTORIST AND THE PASSENGER. IT COULD HAVE BEEN SEVERELY WORSE BECAUSE THERE'S THE QUEEN EMMA PRESCHOOL WITHIN 15 FEET OF WHERE THE VEHICLE CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP. SO, IT COULD'VE BEEN REALLY BAD." Police say an autopsy will determine if the man who was killed suffered a medical condition. Investigators are also examing the SUV to determine speed, and whether the vehicle suffered some sort of mechanical problem. The Pali Highway was shut down for nearly 3-hours. Kenny, Yunji... Back to you at the desk. A sudden string of fires in Aiea this afternoon.
