A 35-year-old man was hospitalized in serious condition Wednesday morning after he was scuba diving off Kewalo Basin, according to Emergency Medical Services officials.

Paramedics were called at around 8:15 a.m.

The man may have suffered a case of the bends -- which is also called decompression sickness.  It's a condition arising from dissolved gases coming out of solution into bubbles inside the body on depressurization.  Effects of the bends can vary from joint pain and rashes to paralysis and death.
