Schatz arrives in Washington
Parents, wife, children flew to Washington on separate flight
Senator-designate Brian Schatz will be sworn in as Hawaii's newest U.S. senator Thursday on Capitol Hill.
Schatz will be sworn in at around 9:30 a.m. Hawaii time. KITV4 News and KITV.com will carry the swearing-in LIVE.
The former lieutenant governor flew to Washington on Air Force One when President Barack Obama left Hawaii Wednesday night.
Schatz told reporters it was a scramble to get ready to head to Washington. An ABC News reporter asked him about the warm overcoat he was wearing.
"I bought this coat yesterday," said Schatz to laughs from reporters.
Schatz's parents, wife and children flew separately to Washington to watch his swearing in ceremony.
When asked about the fiscal cliff, Schatz was right on message less than 24 hours after being told he was coming to Washington.
"At this stage it's difficult to understand why we would inflict this on ourselves. I'm confident cooler heads will prevail," said Schatz. "The only thing worse than a solution to the fiscal cliff would be going over it."
About his flight on Air Force One, Schatz said, "It was a lovely flight. I slept almost the whole way."
